Got'Um Surfing Lessons Lahaina Maui Hawaiian Owned & Operated Lopaka Samudio

Aloha!

My name is Lopaka

Born & raised in Lahaina, Maui. With the ocean as my backyard, it wasn't hard for me to fall in love with surfing. I surf, bodyboard, even skimboard, but stand-up bodyboarding is my favorite. In HawaiÊ»i, the ocean isn’t just a hobby—it’s a way of life, deeply intertwined with our culture and spirit. After two decades of teaching and sharing the traditions of our culture, I’m proud to have the opportunity to now share my passion in a more personal way through my own surf school, GotÊ»Um Surfing.

What inspired you to start a surf school?

Why not own something you love to do? Surfing is my first love. Owning my own business has always been a goal, another thing was my two little girls. I want to be the example for them to see if Daddy can do this, you can do anything.

How did you get into surfing, and what led you to share that passion with others?

I always looked up to my older cousins and older brother. They all shred. My boy, who lived down the road, his dad was a professional surfer and they had all the boards. TheyÊ»d take me surfing everyday. Shout out to J.B and Nick!! J.B was working at Maui Wave Riders. They needed workers, gave me a job to hone in on my craft and the rest is history.

Can you tell us about the journey of starting your surf school?

Starting a business is of the most exciting and challenging things I have ever done, but it feels good seeing everything come together one step at a time.

What challenges are you facing in the beginning?

The name was a big thing, also the logo. I did not know where to start, how to start and who I could ask for help.

What makes your surf school unique compared to other schools in the area?

A fresh new outlook!

What is your teaching philosophy when it comes to helping beginners learn how to surf?

With every guest, I put myself in their shoes. If they are shy or nervous I will open them up to make them more comfortable. I like to be in high spirits for positive attitudes. I adapt my lesson to focus on that person with out everyone knowing it. No pressure, just have fun!

What is the most common mistake beginner surfers make, and how do you help them overcome it?

I gotta say, not listening. If you pay attention and apply yourself in the lesson you will have no problem. Being aware of your surroundings, the ocean can get busy. There are people in front and behind you. I dont put them in a position where I wouldn't want to be in.

Do you have any advice for people who are nervous about trying surfing for the first time?

You are here to have fun! Live in the moment! Once you ride your first wave, you will be hooked!

Where do you see your surf school in the next 5 to 10 years?

I see the business booming! The goal is add to our fleet and have 4 trucks at different locations. I want GotÊ»Um Surfing to sponsor young surfing athletes so they can live their dreams while spreading the love of surfing around the world. Most importantly I want to give back to my community, Lahaina Maui. â€‹

Can you share some random things about you?

- My favorite surf spot is Whalers Kaʻanapali when it breaks, outside

- I like to sing and make jingles. Karaoke is my jam.

- Im super outgoing, but deep down I am an introvert. Im a home body.

- Wrestling was a big part of my life. When I was a sophomore, I won 4th in Hawaiʻi State.
